Magic with Meta Tags and Search Engine Optimization

First of all, don't let me mislead you, meta tags are not the "magic bullet" that will skyrocket your site to the top of all search page listings. They are a tool that will help improve your standings in search engines that use them. Use them with other marketing strategies to garner more page views.

Another thing to remember: most search engines look at the body of text on your pages, as well as the page title. They take this information as higher relevance than any meta tags. So, be sure to always have a relevant (TITLE) on your pages, and relevant content in the body of the page. This will improve your rankings more than just meta tags alone.

What is a Meta Tag?
A meta tag is a hidden tag that lives in the (HEAD) of an HTML document. It is used to supply additional information about the HTML document. The meta tag has three possible attributescontent,http-equiv, andname. Meta tags always provide information in a name/value pair. Thenameandhttp-equivattributes provide the name information and thecontentprovides the value information. Meta tags do not have a closing tag.

content
This attribute will always be found in a well formed meta tag. It provides the value information in the name/value pair. It can be any valid string, which you should enclose in quotes.

name
This is the name portion in the name value pair. You can use any name that you would like or that might be useful to you. Some common names are:

  • keywords - words that identify what the page is about, usually used in search engines
    (meta name="keywords" content="HTML, HTML help, meta tags, promotion, web sites")

  • description - a short description of the page
    (meta name="description" content="Boost your marketing strategy with meta tags")

  • author - the author's name and possibly email address
    (meta name="author" content="Jennifer Kyrnin")

  • robots - to allow or disallow indexing by robots
    (meta name="robots" content="noindex")

  • copyright - the copyright date of the page
    (meta name="copyright" content="August 1999")

http-equiv
This attribute is also a name for the name/value pair, but it is used by the server to include that name/value pair in the MIME document header passed to the Web browser before sending the actual HTML document. Some common http-equiv types are:

  • charset - defines the character set used in the page
    (meta http-equiv="charset" content="iso-8859-1")

  • expires - when the document will be out of date
    (meta http-equiv="expires" content="31 Dec 99")

  • refresh - sets the number of seconds to reload the page or reload to a new page
    Reload the page every 10 seconds:
    (meta http-equiv="refresh" content="10")
    Reload to a new page after 10 seconds:
    (meta http-equiv="refresh" content="10;url=http://webdesign.about.com/")

How to Use a Meta Tag
Meta tags are included in the (HEAD) of an HTML document. If you are using meta tags to improve your standing in search engines, then you should focus on your description and keywords.

The description tag
Use the description tag to describe what your page is about. Engines that use it will supply the content of this tag when displaying a list of links. For example, if you do a search on About.com, you will see the description listed on the search results page.

The keywords tag
Keywords help search engines to categorize your site, and to allow people to find your pages more quickly. However, most search engines have limits as to how many meta keywords are viewed. It is a good idea to review your keywords and make sure that they are as concise and specific as possible.

Note: Replace "(" to "<" and ")" to ">"

The new open-format auto discovery allows webmasters to specify the location of their Sitemaps within their robots.txt file, eliminating the need to submit sitemaps to each search engine separately.This will be a lot helpful to the webmasters who can now easily submit their content to the search engines and benefit from reduced unnecessary traffic by the crawlers and bots. The search engines get information with regards to pages to index as well as metadata with clues about which pages are newly updated and which pages are identified as the most important and search users get more fresh content.Just by adding one single line to the robot.txt file in your root directory ,you can add auto sitemap discovery.

Numbered Page Navigation for Blogger

The ability to 'paginate' Blogger blogs has been a long requested feature. Pagination allows us to number blog pages like those of a book, offering readers the ability to navigate deeper into the archives with ease when compared to the 'newer' and 'older' post links.

After many failed attempts, I was almost ready to admit defeat with this function until I discovered this excellent script by Mohamed of Blogger Accessories. This script replaces the default blog pager (links to newer, older and home pages) with numbered page navigation. Furthermore, it offers the ability to customize the number of page links and the number of posts displayed on each page.

Mohamed's Blogger pagination script may be installed using two different methods:

Both of these installation methods will achieve a similar effect. I personally find adding the code directly to the template makes it easier to customize the style of the pagination links, but if you feel uncomfortable editing your template, the widget installation may be much easier for you.

Here is how the finished installation will appear in your blog:

Once installed, these "page numbers" will appear on your home, archive and labels pages, allowing your readers to easily access pages in your archives. However, the page numbers will not appear on individual post pages. I've noticed many blogs which use pagination like this, and among them none displayed these page links beneath individual posts.

To learn more about using the numbered pagination script for Blogger, pop over to Blogger Accessories to read the useful tutorials Mohamed has posted.

My Slightly Modified Version
As you may have noticed, I'm using a slightly modified version of this script here on Blogger Buster. When customizing the style of Mohamed's original version, I noticed a few elements which I preferred to change for my own preferences, and also modified the CSS for how the numbered links are displayed.
Add the CSS code to your style section

If you would prefer to use this slightly different version instead, here is what you should do.

Firstly, copy all of the code below and paste this just before the closing tag in your template:

.showpageArea a {
text-decoration:underline;
}
.showpageNum a {
text-decoration:none;
border: 1px solid #ccc;
margin:0 3px;
padding:3px;
}
.showpageNum a:hover {
border: 1px solid #ccc;
background-color:#ccc;
}
.showpagePoint {
color:#333;
text-decoration:none;
border: 1px solid #ccc;
background: #ccc;
margin:0 3px;
padding:3px;
}
.showpageOf {
text-decoration:none;
padding:3px;
margin: 0 3px 0 0;
}
.showpage a {
text-decoration:none;
border: 1px solid #ccc;
padding:3px;
}
.showpage a:hover {
text-decoration:none;
}
.showpageNum a:link,.showpage a:link {
text-decoration:none;
color:#333;
}

This should change the colors of text and links in the pagination to match the styles already present in your blog template. So if your default text is white against a dark background, the "Pages (#)" section of the script should appear the same way. The color for the background and hover effects of the numbers can be altered according to your preferences by editing the hex values to match the style of your own template.

Add the JavaScript code beneath your posts

The second part of the installation is to add the JavaScript code beneath your posts which will locate and replace the existing "Newer/Older Posts" link. To add this script, go to Layout>Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard, and do not tick the "expand widget templates" box (it's much easier to add the code while the widgets are contracted). Then find this section of code (or similar) in your template:

Immediately after the closing tag, add the following section of code:
Once you have added this code, attempt to preview your template to ensure there are no code errors. You will not be able to see the script in action on the preview, but this step ensures no adverse effects to your layout.

In the code above, you will notice that I have highlighted three sections of code in bold red. You may need to customize these sections to better suit your preferences:

On line 5, you may need to change the ".com" to reflect your domain extention if you use a custom domain.

var isFirstPage = thisUrl.substring(thisUrl.length-5,thisUrl.length)==".com/";

This default installation should work fine for anyone hosted on Blog*Spot or a dot.com domain, but you will need to alter this section if your custom domain ends in .co.uk or .info for example.

In lines 19 and 20, you can change these values to alter how many posts are displayed on each page, and how many links will be visible at the same time.

The var pageCount = 5; section defiines the number of posts displayed on each page, while var displayPageNum = 5; defines the number of links which are displayed (eg: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5) beneath the posts section.

Once you have added this JavaScript code and made any changes nescessary for your needs, save your template and open up your blog in your browser. Now you should see the pagination links appear beneath your main posts section, and also on Labels and Archive pages.

20 Essential Blog Directories to Submit Your Blog

Gaining exposure for your blog is critical to building a following, readership, and revenue. Besides the basic SEO steps of adding compelling and keyword friendly titles, URL structure and descriptions (along with the basic Wordpress SEO plugins) basic link building for blogs begins with listing them in blog directories.

Personally, I love launching a new blog, or adding one to an existing site, and watching the high valued links roll in. And as we know, BLOG = Better Listings On Google.

There are many paths to consider when building links to your site or blog such as link baiting or blogroll link swapping, but few are as easy to implement and cost effective as submitting to blog directories - and good link juice is essential to a healthy growing blog.

Let us take a look at 20 popular directories worthy of your consideration.

1. Best of the Web Blog Search La Crem de la Crem, Best of the Web’s Blog Directory is very selective and only lists aged and valuable blogs. A link from here is majestic and well deserved.

2. EatonWeb Blog Directory is a real jewel with many aged inbound links and a blog rating system. You may have to pay a fee for your blog to be reviewed, but like Yahoo, the review fee is well worth the few dollars.

3. Blog Hub offers a drop down category and member blog list. With its “new blogger” list and hot topics, Blog Hub is a great directory to list your site.

4. Upon visiting Bloggernity, you find a crisp, clean, and easy to navigate site. Scrolling down, you find the new blogs. As there is little advertising on the home page, it is pleasant to the eye of the reader as well.

5. Blogarama has an impressive listing of over 65,000 blogs. The site is well designed and follows the same content categories as many other sites.

6. One of the most selective Blog Directories on the web (and Wordpress powered), Blog Search Engine is owned by Performancing’s parent company and serves search results powered by IceRocket.

7. Blog Catalog features a vast directory of categories, from academic to writing, while offering the ability to search by country, language, or user. It has a no frills design, but offers convenient member access through simple blog registration.

8. Globe of Blogs has too many features to list. In order to be listed on the site, the blog must not be commercial. The site may appear to be busy, but I like the features of being able to search by title, author, or subject. Narrowing the search becomes easier on this blog.

9. The ultimate directory of British blogs connotes all things British. It is not directed by location, but by the culture! It is asked that bloggers be genuinely “britished.” Being listed in this blog reaches readers all the way across the pond!

10. Blog Universe is the perfect place to promote your video or podcast themed blog. Its layout is easy to navigate. Although the content is limited, it is an all around good directory site worthy of submission.

11. Bigger Blogs is a relatively new blog directory with only a few blogs registered. The blog is intertwined with a business directory. The blog section is difficult to find, and it is located through a link on the right side of the business directory page. However, the benefit is that the earlier you are accepted on a blog directory, the more exposure your blog will obtain. In addition, a back link is indeed a back link, so this can help with your search engine placement.

12. Bloggeries has the best categories and subcategories home page on the internet. The layout is clear and concise, and readers are able to find what they are looking for in a snap!

13. Bloggapedia has an interesting and eye catching homepage. Readers are easily connected to the top blogs and newest posts. Innovative categories and a colorful design make this blog directory a hit.

14. Spillbean is a well-designed blog directory site with categories such as health, society, internet, and personal. The site is aesthetically pleasing, but there are not many listings yet.

15. Blogging Fusion is a blog with over sixty categories. These categories include photo blogs and family focused blogs. Blogging Fusion has an good amount of blog listings within the directory, and it also has visitor stats available.

16. Blogflux is not only a tool for bloggers, but a directory that has the listings in alphabetic order. The blog listings are organized and clear. It is definitely an effective blog directory in which to be listed.

17. The blogs on the top listings of Bloglisting are fun, colourful, and catch the attention of the reader. Bloglisting displays the page ranking blogs, which is a helpful tool when determining with whom you want to exchange links.

18. Blogio may be a small blog directory with few listings, but it worthy of a submission. Despite its small size, there are quality blogs and a solid ability to search on this site.

19. Blog Explosion claims to be the largest blog promoter on the internet. They have a vast directory but do not seem to have direct links. However, the listing in the directory can still show up in SERP’s, so keep this in mind.

20. Super Blog Directory is a great site that offers tools to posters that others do not. You can see the latest submitted links and blogs on the site, which is a perk that draws traffic into the directory.

The above listings are a glimpse inside the large and vast world of blog directories and the valuable inbound links that your can build for your blog and your business.

There are countless more directories at your disposal, which are always just a Google, Yahoo, Live or Ask.com search away.

Once it has maintained top notch and updated content, the SEO Blog will definitely boost a website's ranking in the search engine result pages. So, this only means that once an SEO Blog is created and maintained wisely, it can give your website massive traffic and popularity.

SEO Blog Tips

Below are few SEO Blog tips to jumpstart your own blog and maximize its full potential:

1. If you want to succeed in your SEO Blog, host it in your own domain and not on free hosting services. Hosting your own blog will maximize the links pointing to your website. Search engines usually use a blog's link popularity to rank it. Thus, the more links pointing to your site, the higher your page rank will be.

2. Give your blog an RSS feed. An RSS feed allows your SEO Blog to be easily syndicated. The syndication will allow your blog to get link backs from RSS directories or others that display the feed. With this, it is important that each of your blog post has an RSS feed to keep your readers updated about your blog's latest activity.

3. Make sure that your SEO Blog has quality content. Grammar matters! Thus, it is necessary that you keep good quality content with proper punctuation and mastery on the English language. Search engines are meticulous on blog entries that lack proper punctuations, grammar, or capitalization. Once your post doesn't follow this rule, it is possible that search engines will presume that your SEO Blog is created by bots, leading to a possible ban.

4. Use catchy SEO Blog titles. This will grab the attention of the readers browsing your blog. There is no better way to lure blog visitors than magnetizing them with attention-grabber blog titles.

5. Employ SEO techniques like integrating powerful keywords or phrases. When writing a blog entry in your SEO Blog, make sure to write them like you are making a web copy. Blog entries should be convincing, nice to read, and keywords should flow naturally.

The circled "Read More......" method above is what we are going to create to prevent from showing long long post.

This method will also makes a tidy blog, prevent long loading time of showing all the exact full post of your blog if you have lots of long long post as below in font page of your blog.

Google Blog converters 1.0 officially released

Now u know that blogger allows users the ability to export all contents of their blog to some new blog. BUT This new Open Source project provides the ability to easily move blog posts and comments from service to service.

This initial release provides Python libraries and runnable scripts that convert between the export formats of Blogger, LiveJournal, MovableType, and WordPress. This project contains a number of converters to and from different Blog services. The code is written in Python with scripts to execute the conversions either on the command-line, through a Windows batch script, or hosted on Google App Engine.

In addition, the source code includes templates for hosting these conversions on Google App Engine. Future additions to the project will include support for BlogML and synchronization tools between various services that do not provide a import/export feature but do provide APIs for accessing and modifying blog contents.

Some Google Tricks

Search engine tricks

A few things you might want to try with Google:

Hand type the following prefixes and note their utility:

link:url Shows other pages with links to that url.

related:url same as "what's related" on serps.

site:domain restricts search results to the given domain.

allinurl: shows only pages with all terms in the url.

inurl: like allinurl, but only for the next query word.

allintitle: shows only results with terms in title.

intitle: similar to allintitle, but only for the next word. "intitle:webmasterworld google" finds only pages with webmasterworld in the title, and google anywhere on the page.

cache:url will show the Google version of the passed url.

info:url will show a page containing links to related searches, backlinks, and pages containing the url. This is the same as typing the url into the search box.

spell: will spell check your query and search for it.

stocks: will lookup the search query in a stock index.

filetype: will restrict searches to that filetype. "-filetype:doc" to remove Microsoft word files.

daterange: is supported in Julian date format only. 2452384 is an example of a Julian date.

maps: If you enter a street address, a link to Yahoo Maps and to MapBlast will be presented.

phone: enter anything that looks like a phone number to have a name and address displayed. Same is true for something that looks like an address (include a name and zip code)

site:www.somesite.net "+www.somesite.+net"

(tells you how many pages of your site are indexed by google)

allintext: searches only within text of pages, but not in the links or page title

allinlinks: searches only within links, not text or title

I hope there is something new in here for you and maybe this infos will be helpfull for ya.

The Blogger Navbar is a default navigation and search bar on top of all blogspot blogs and they allow you to change the color, but sometimes it may not blend with your template.

How to hide the Navbar.

It's very easy to hide the Navbar because you can do it by adding a CSS tag to your blogger template. The code below hides the Navbar in new Blogger.

height:0px;

visibility:hidden;

display:none;

}

If you just transferred form the old Blogger to the new you can see the code to hide the Navbar is not working. That's because Google have change the CSS tags to display the Blogger Navbar. So you have to find the code below and replace it with the code above to hide the Navbar.

Optimizing blog

Optimizing new Blogger blog

Optimizing the text in your posts so it targets a maximum of 3 search phrases is a really good thing to do because by optimizing for maximum of 3 search phrases you are likely to get a higher search engine ranking and thereby a better chance to get readers to your blog.

How do you optimise the text

Headlines are importent

By using the H1 ... H6 html tags for important headlines before paragraphs you are automatic optimizing you blog, because these tags have a special relevancy weight in SEO. You can look at it as if a hole paragraphs have a headline then this part must be important, nothing strange about that.

If you use your keywords in the headlines it is a good thing to do, but you don’t have to go extreme and for the most important keyword use a H1 and a H2 for secondary keywords and so on. It's just a good thing to have a keyword or two in the headlines. For the H4, H5 and H6 don't spend time to considering how to use them because they have so little influence it's not worth considering.

Main keyword phrases to be in the first line

Another good idea is to get your main keyword phrases in the first line of your post or as high up in the post you can get them. The logic here is that words in the top of the post must be more important then words longer down in the post.

So try to get your main keyword or keyword phrases in the first or second line of your post or as high as you can get it. I know that it's not always as easy as it sound, but try.

Consider the frequency of your keyword

By considering the frequency of your keyword in your post, you can also optimize by doing that. When there is a good frequency for your keywords 4 - 8 % of the total words in your post, the search engines also gives you a better ranking by doing this, but remember as always don't overdo it. Remember that your text in html anchors also counts when you are looking at the frequency.
